On the Way to Market
Wipe out the impressions. Hold the impulses still. Confine yourself to the present time.
Perrette was carrying a pot of milk on her head into town. Under the pot lay a small cushion. She walked briskly, in flat shoes.
On the way she did her sums. With the money from the milk she would buy a hundred eggs, hatch chicks and raise hens. Even the foxes would have to leave her enough of them. For the hens she would get a pig. It could be fattened on a little bran and sold at a profit. Then a cow would be possible, calf and all.
She could already see the calf leaping among the other animals. For joy she gave a leap herself.
The pot fell. The milk lay on the road.
