Will you keep on roaming ever farther? See, the good lies so near. Only learn to seize happiness, for happiness is always there.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

What is possible at any time has no set date. The lake twenty minutes from your flat is there to visit on any warm evening, so you put it off. On holiday you would drive an hour for a similar shore, because the days are numbered and otherwise the outing would be lost.

Distance has this advantage: it demands a decision. What is near demands nothing, and that is why you so rarely choose it. Its reliability robs it of urgency.

You can help yourself by imagining that it will soon be over: the move decided, this summer the last. That works. Only then you already see the shore as a farewell, and what you enjoy is the wistfulness more than the lake.

It is harder to go without any such occasion. On an ordinary evening the water is simply water, a little cool, a few people sitting on the jetty. Nothing about it announces itself as special, and no one is counting the days.

You could come back tomorrow. Perhaps that is why you stay a little longer today, perhaps that is exactly why you don't.
