How It Moved Its Ears

The world is dew — / dew, and fleeting. / And yet... and yet.

Kobayashi Issa

His grandfather brought him a young hare, alive. Little ǀHan≠kass’o set it down on the ground, ran after it, caught it and let it go again. Even as a grown man he remembered how beautifully the animal had moved its ears.

His mother wanted him to kill the hare so they could eat it. He wanted to keep it. One day his mother and grandmother sent him to fetch water. He tied the hare up and went.

When he came back, they had killed it. He cried and demanded that they look for another one. They told him a story so that he would sit still and listen. There would not be a second hare, they said.
