Creatures of a day are we. What is man, what is he not? A dream of a shadow. But when a radiance falls, given by the gods, the short time shines bright and life is gentle.

Some good things cannot be credited to anyone. A test result comes back clear, a conversation goes well although you had hardly prepared, a whole afternoon feels light without your being able to say why. You would like to say thank you and don't know to whom.

Then it is tempting to find a place for the good fortune after all. You explain it by your composure, by a wise decision that morning, by some merit that can be found in hindsight. So the gift becomes a result. That is reassuring, because results can be repeated.

But the day itself changes in the process. What had fallen to you made you lenient, almost generous, precisely because it did not come from you. Booked as an achievement, it demands a sequel, and the next ordinary day suddenly looks like a step backwards.

Perhaps the thanks can be left without an address. In the evening you hold a door open for someone, a little longer than necessary.
