After dinner Masha asked her husband to look through the lottery's list of winners. Ivan found the series of her ticket in the newspaper. He did not check the individual ticket number yet. First they wanted to picture what the winnings would make possible.

An estate in the country. Travel. Never going to the office again. Then it occurred to Ivan that the ticket belonged to his wife. If she came along, she would dictate his every step and keep back every rouble. He looked at her with growing annoyance. She looked at him and thought of how he would reach for her money.

Now Ivan read out the number, to hurt her: 46. Her ticket said 26. To both of them the rooms suddenly seemed dark and cramped.
