The Bald Man

Everyone takes the limits of their own field of vision for the limits of the world.

Arthur Schopenhauer

In an oil merchant's shop sat a parrot that entertained the customers. When a cat burst in after a mouse, the parrot took fright, flew up onto a shelf and knocked over jars of oil. The merchant came back, saw the puddles and struck it on the head. The bird's feathers fell out there.

After that it was silent. The merchant regretted the blow and waited for days, in vain, for a word.

Then a beggar with a clean-shaven head walked past the shop. The parrot called after him: had he knocked over a jar of oil too?
