The helmsman's art promises him not the sea but the helm. The storm hinders the ship — not the helmsman's art.

Above the Bed
The helmsman's art promises him not the sea but the helm. The storm hinders the ship — not the helmsman's art.
When Frida Kahlo came home after her bus accident, she had to lie in bed for months. Her mother had a mirror fitted to the underside of the bed canopy. Frida asked her father for paints. Her parents also had an easel built that she could work at lying down.
Above her was her own face. In 1926 she painted her first self-portrait, in a velvet dress. She gave it to her friend Alejandro Gómez Arias.
