When you tell someone about an argument, it gets tidier in the telling. You know where it started, who raised their voice first, which sentence was one too many. By the third time you have a version that can be told smoothly, and it is precisely this smoothness that feels like clarity.
Then someone asks you what the other person might have been thinking at that moment. You realise your version had no place set aside for that. You didn't lie. Everything you told is true. You just arranged it so that it runs toward the conclusion you already knew.
An order you work out for yourself is usually neater than the one you come upon. It has fewer edges and no places that fit with nothing. The other is less comfortable. In it there is a sentence you said yourself and would rather not remember, and a tiredness on the other side that you didn't notice at the time.
The next time you tell it, you falter at a point you used to get past smoothly.
